When Sunbathers Escaped Attack, Popular Picture Shows Beach Patrol Running ‘All Out’ To the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong resident of Bondi, describes the iconic beach as her own backyard. On that particular Sunday evening, she, like many neighbors, heard loud noises ringing out around the neighbourhood.

“We all thought the same, but I considered it was still too bright and there was nothing visible,” Ching states. She left her home, she witnessed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The looks they wore made it clear a crisis was unfolding.

As she stood on the avenue, speaking to a pair who had run up the incline still dripping wet, she heard someone approaching behind her. The person was a rescuer, running at full speed towards Bondi without shoes from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while holding a defibrillator.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I spotted this flash of blue,” she recalls. “He was just flying past. He was the only one running in the direction that all the others was trying to escape from, and hauling that big kit and barefoot … He moved at something that certainly every instinct would signal you to run in the reverse way.

“Just no hesitation, but just fully full throttle sprinting.”

A Symbol of Bravery During Crisis

The photograph taken by Ching of the rescuer, since identified as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as one of many instances of heroism in the following of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, another lifeguard, explained that Doolan, called “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to back up the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to help emergency personnel, law enforcement and medical teams treating numerous victims.

Local Response and Solidarity

Doolan’s story was just one of many to emerge from the neighbourhood, with the lifeguard clubhouse beside the location of the violence transforming into a temporary medical station. Accounts show that other team members were also seen helping out, such as going into the water to save people in distress.

Following the attack, comments of gratitude circulated widely. One post conveyed appreciation for the responders who demonstrated that “compassion will always triumph over evil”.

The team of rescuers later shared a communication, noting they were “coming to terms with what occurred”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your kind sentiments and solidarity. We are touched by the care for our responders,” the group stated. “In time, we will share our stories in the aim that it supports those impacted.”

Local Government Recognition

Waverley council, the governing body that oversees many professional beach safety officers, stated that the crew rose to the occasion from the instant the incident began until late that evening.

“People have shared so many powerful narratives, but the popular image of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help save lives is incredible,” stated a council representative.

“These individuals demonstrate altruism every day in keeping our world-famous shores protected for surfers and swimmers, but what we witnessed on Sunday should be highly praised.

“While we mourn and process the horror of this heinous act of violence, I think it is crucial that we consider just how much light we have witnessed in the face of such evil.”
