Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of excellent saves to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's team up to third in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and sit six points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils duties at both ends of the field

Following a uninspiring weekday display in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a only attempts on goal, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair handled superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have faded slightly and fans headed to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a massive worry for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised strikers - had netted just one league goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having space and opportunity to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, as well, failed to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. The majority of Everton's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly delivered threatening crosses into the Spurs box.

The Toffees: Moyes' men travel to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: Spurs go to St James' Park on late October for their fourth-round League Cup match against the Magpies.
