Time is ripe to alter Manchester United's system - Amorim declares.

Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes was one of multiple first-team players absent from the Boxing Day victory against Newcastle United.

Boss Ruben Amorim says that switching Manchester United's tactical system due to media noise would have meant "the end" for him.

In a first against Newcastle, Amorim moved away from his customary back three formation with wide defenders and chose to deploy an standard back four shielded by two central midfielders.

By his own admission this at times became a back six in the closing stages as his squad held on for a win - securing just their second clean sheet of the campaign.

Despite he once notably remarked that not even the highest authority could compel him to change his system, Amorim asserts the option to experiment with varied setups has remained part of his long-term vision.

Nevertheless, he stresses he could only alter the tactics when his team were performing well enough - otherwise it would seem as if he was giving in to external pressure.

"At the time I arrived here last season, I realized maybe I don't have the players to excel in that system, but it was the start of a process," he commented.

"We were trying to establish an style. Now is a separate juncture. We are missing a full complement of personnel, and we need adjust, so they see the reason we are changing.

"The change isn't because of the demands of journalists, or the supporters.

"Whenever media criticize changing the formation constantly, I can't make a change because the squad will understand I'm changing because of you and I think that is a disaster for the manager.

"When we are playing well in our system, then is the opportunity to adapt.

"This will help us become a better team because when all the personnel are available, we are not going to employ a back three all the time."

Availability Challenges Continue

With just two victories in eight games prior to beating Newcastle, it is debatable whether Amorim is correct to claim his side have been in good form.

He is, nonetheless, operating with a severely stretched squad, with seven first-team stars already ruled out for the forthcoming home game against winless Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That figure will increase if playmaker Mason Mount fails to recover the knock that forced his withdrawal from the Newcastle game at the interval.

Captain Bruno Fernandes is among those who will be absent for the Wolves match, even though he is understood to be pressing his manager to allow him to return following his muscle injury.

"Fernandes is already saying he needs to practice," said Amorim. "But there is no chance he is going to play against Wolves. No chance. You can write that."

The Captain's Role Endures

However, the 31-year-old will likely still be deeply engaged, as while most injured stars watch matches from a private box, Fernandes was spotted keeping a close eye on the warm-ups from the mouth of the tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim anticipates his captain to carry on offering insight.

"He is a natural leader," he affirmed. "He cannot be that guy that when he is absent, he's not talking and speaking. He's constantly communicating. That is the reason he's the skipper.

"He has negative aspects sometimes - the way he gesticulates - but he has a multitude of positive qualities. After he recovers, he heads to watch the rest of the squad training. There are a lot of aspects that go unnoticed.

"I'm not sure if he desires my job or not, but he's a leader. The guy is a leader."

Recovery Timeline for Injured Personnel

Although the exact date for Fernandes' return - and that of other unavailable stars like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - is unknown, before the conclusion of January, the club will see the return of Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from international competition.
