The NBA legend Testifies He Felt No Fear of the Racing Body in Legal Battle
The basketball icon, as he cordially introduced himself in a federal courtroom on Friday, admitted that his competitive side and novelty within the sport emboldened his effort with 23XI Racing to confront Nascar over perceived violations of competition laws.
Financial Stakes and a Competitive Drive
The owner disclosed operational insights of his 23XI team, revealing he invested $40 million of his own funds into the Nascar Cup series team co-founded with partner Polk and driver Hamlin.
“Someone had to step forward,” Jordan said in the Charlotte courtroom. “I was a new person, I wasn’t afraid. I believed I could take on Nascar in its entirety. I felt as far as the sport it needed to be looked at from a different view.”
The Core Dispute: Franchise System and Renewal Demands
At issue is the expiration of a 2016 agreement where Nascar granted each team a “charter”. This system mirrors other professional sports with independent franchises, like the NBA’s Hornets or the NFL’s Panthers. The agreement was due to end in 2024 when Nascar demanded teams renew their charters.
