The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Thriller That Blends Survival Horror and Among Us Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive experience where a girl harboring multiple personalities within her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four distinct personas, each with unique fears and drives. These entities can take over at will, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.
Judging by showcased footage, much of the action unfolds within a eerie medical facility, while other scenes depict the main character exploring a desolate church.
A World of Personal Dread
"What makes you afraid of? What makes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Elements that appear minor to other people can activate something primal inside us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are unique to each person."
The central mechanic revolves around controlling whichever soul surfaces at any given moment. However, these identities will change involuntarily as you play. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become amplified and attack the protagonist one after another. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Decision
At first glance, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with nurses all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the lobby have large blooms where their necks are. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the personas claims that the body belongs to them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
After a player have deduced a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. However, because each soul can deceive or hide the reality, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The last one remaining might be a fraud. Either way, your choices are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is can be follow on platforms.
