The Divinity Developer Clarifies Its Implementation of AI Tools for New Divinity

The studio behind acclaimed titles like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin recently teased its upcoming project, sparking a wave of anticipation within the gaming community. However, follow-up comments from the studio's lead designer have introduced a new dimension to the narrative, focusing on the team's philosophy toward generative artificial intelligence.

AI as a Creative Assistant, Not a Substitute

In a new clarification, Larian's director detailed that the company is employing machine learning for particular supporting functions. These encompass enhancing PowerPoint slides, generating rough visual ideas, and drafting temporary copy.

Notably, Vincke stressed that the final material in the game will be authored exclusively by human artists. "Larian is creating every line ourselves," he affirmed.

Larian is actively growing our team of writers and are actively forming narrative groups.

Given that this area is being particularly mentioned — we currently have 23 concept artists and have positions available for additional artists.

All our efforts we do is additive and aimed at enabling creatives to spend greater focus on the creative process.

Every AI system used well is additive to a developer's workflow, never a stand-in for their skill.

Tempering Reactions with Clear Intent

The admission of AI usage initially sparked concern among some the player base. In reply, Vincke provided more elaboration on online platforms.

"Our team utilizes AI tools to explore references, similar to we use the internet and art books," he explained. "During the conceptual planning process we use it as a basic framework for structure which we then replace with authentic artwork."

He continued, "Our studio recruits artists for their inherent skill, not for their capacity to follow what a machine suggests."

Three Pillars of Practical Application

Vincke had earlier outlined the studio's targeted approach to machine learning, grouping its use into primary functions:

  • Streamlining Repetitive Work: This includes motion capture cleaning, dialogue cleanup, and technical processes like adapting animations for different models.
  • Fast-Tracked Experimentation: Using tools to speedily create rough models of gameplay ideas to validate concepts before complete production.
  • Experimental Frontiers: Researching how AI could one day enhance emergent gameplay, specifically in managing dynamic reactions in a detailed game universe.

He explicitly stated that key artistic areas — such as visual art — are are absolutely not departments where the team is reducing artistic input. On the contrary, Larian is recruiting more in these exact positions.

"Larian is not releasing a game with any AI components, nor planning on cutting creatives to substitute them with AI," Vincke summarized.
