More than forty-two million US residents are anxiously awaiting to hear if the federal government will utilize contingency money to provide billions in food aid.

Judges gave the Trump administration until Monday at 12:00 EST (5:00 PM GMT) to provide details about how it intends to pay for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly called food assistance.

Financial support for the program is still uncertain due to the extended federal closure resulting from the inability of lawmakers to approve a funding deal.

Despite the court decision or alternative solution, millions Americans have gone without essential nutrition support since funding for the program expired on Saturday.

State Administration and Government Money

While state governments manage the assistance, the programme depends on funds from the national administration, which has been without budget and closed since October 1st.

Federal judges in two northeastern states determined that the USDA needs to use $5.25 billion (£4bn) in reserve money to make at least partial payments to Americans on Snap.

The program requires about eight billion dollars per month.

Legal Challenges and Administration Reaction

US President Donald Trump earlier stated he had instructed administration attorneys to ask the judiciary how the government could lawfully finance Snap, adding: "Even if we get immediate guidance, it will sadly be postponed."

On Sunday, the Treasury Secretary said in a television appearance that the president wanted to hear from the judiciary about how to legally move money around to fund Snap payments but they could be distributed as early as mid-week.

"A procedure exists that must be adhered to," Bessent said. "Therefore, we've got to figure out what the process is."

Late last month, the Department of Agriculture said it will not distribute food assistance funds starting 01 November because of the federal closure, saying: "Resources are exhausted."

Legal Actions and Local Reactions

Half the states and the District of Columbia filed suit against the administration over the assistance suspension and contended that they have a legal obligation to maintain the initiative in their areas.

Separately, municipalities and non-profits also initiated legal action.

Amid doubts regarding government nutrition money, some states said they would use their own money to fund food assistance.
