The announcement came as the two leaders met in the Indian capital and asserted their relationship were “immune to foreign coercion.”

The statement, made on Friday, seemed to be a pointed rebuke at western countries, that have repeatedly attempted to urge New Delhi into curtailing its historical relations with Moscow. The Indian leader, without mentioning oil specifically, echoed the sentiment by noting that “secure fuel supplies has been a robust and crucial cornerstone of the Indo-Russian cooperation.”

Questioning US Interference

In the lead-up to the meeting, via a media interview, Putin had criticized American pressure regarding India's oil imports. He argued, “If the US can claim the privilege to buy our nuclear fuel, why shouldn’t India claim the equivalent access?”

The Indian prime minister later described India's alliance with Russia as “a lodestar” and said it was “founded on reciprocal esteem and profound confidence.”

Reaffirming Defence and Economic Cooperation

Friday's talks produced a number of important deals regarding military and trade relations. One significant result was the signing of an joint economic plan aimed at 2030, which aims to boost commerce to $100bn per year by the target year.

Additionally agreed to recalibrate their strategic cooperation. Although Russia is still India's primary source of arms, this role has declined in recent years as India works to widen its sources.
