Meteorologists are saying a chilly beginning to the new year, with snowfall likely over large parts of the UK. Revelers are advised to wrap up as sub-zero temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Plans Continue Despite Warnings

Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay events are set to go ahead, following last year's postponement. This proceeds amid weather alerts for snow in northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so additional clothing will be necessary," noted the Met Office.

Displays Under Clear but Frosty Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is set to be suited to fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. Readings are expected to be low, making additional clothing a necessity, according to forecasters.

To the north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not expected to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Extensive Advisories for Friday

Heading into Friday, weather warnings are active across Northern Ireland and from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

Temperatures Expected to Fall Even More

Going into the new year, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are set to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are likely to batter the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Health Warnings Issued

At the same time, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to stay active until noon on 5 January, with temperatures forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.
