Manchester United Poised to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side

Schüller, who has half a year remaining on her deal, has been a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a major coup for the Women’s Super League side.

Her exit from Munich was expected after she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the club's fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading strikers. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the move have now been completed.

Reliable Goal Threat to Boost United's Forward Line

The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a significant uplift to the team's attacking options. She has been remarkably consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.

  • For seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford

Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United appear to be building momentum.

Recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought further business:

  1. The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.

On the midfielder's new deal, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”

The new defender, having arrived from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
