Lehmann Criticises England Fans for Abuse Aimed at Steve Smith

Smith has appeared in 38 times against the English team and accumulated 3,436 career runs.

England fans should be better regarding the taunts they hurl at Australian batsman Smith, remarks ex- manager Darren Lehmann.

Smith, 36 years old, has become a regular focus of songs and jeers from English supporters in the wake of his involvement in the 2018's ball-altering incident.

He lost his position as captain and barred for a year while Darren Lehmann, who was exonerated of wrongdoing, stepped down as coach following the episode.

"The jeers you receive is constant," Lehmann said. "This is unbelievable."

"Smith is playing constantly. It's likely more difficult for him."

"Among English crowds they just never forget. It's as if they have not once made a mistake in their life."

"It's mainly the individuals that drink too much and act up like fools."

Context of the Ball-Tampering Episode

During a Test versus the Proteas, Steve Smith acknowledged Australia's "captain's group" created a scheme to interfere with the ball.

Ex- opening batsman David Warner showed batter Bancroft how to utilize abrasive material to rough up the ball, and he was then caught in the act by broadcast cameras during play. The two players were also suspended in addition to Steve Smith.

Fallout and Continued Response

Steve Smith made his comeback after the ball-tampering episode in the 2019 Ashes Test at Edgbaston Stadium and has been booed frequently from then on.

England supporters also center jeers on his emotional news conference in 2018.

"We did the mistake, accept it and get past it," Lehmann stated.

"One strives to move on the best you can. One faces reminded every day and that is an inevitable part."

"He can hold his head high with how he deals with everything."

"England's Barmy Army should be improved than that. Many are indeed and are largely positive of the proceedings in the sport."
