Italy and Canada have raised concerns about the treatment of their nationals who were assaulted and robbed by Jewish settlers in the occupied West Bank.

Particulars Surrounding the Violent Incident

Three Italians and a Canadian were assaulted in the pre-dawn hours of Sunday in the community of Ein al-Duyuk, near the city of Jericho. They were serving to help shield Palestinian residents from escalating violence by settlers.

“In the early morning of November 30th, a group of ten masked settlers, some armed with military-style rifles, burst into the home where we were sleeping after night-watch,” stated the Canadian volunteer.

Each of the four required hospital treatment and one, an male Italian volunteer, was continuing to undergo treatment in the city of Ramallah on Monday for more serious wounds.

Rising Tensions in Ein al-Duyuk

The pace and intensity of attacks in this area have risen dramatically over the last eight weeks. This follows the creation of an unauthorized settler encampment nearby and the influx of new, confrontational settlers.

The Canadian foreign ministry stated it “utterly rejects the violent acts committed by radical settlers and opposes any actions or talk about annexation of the Palestinian territories.”

Italy's top diplomat, Minister Tajani, told reporters: “We cannot tolerate of this aggression. This is not the way for the settlers to make their claims.”

Absence of Protection and Broader Context

Residents and advocates report there has been no meaningful police intervention to stop the attacks or dismantle the outpost. Leading members of the Israeli governing coalition actively support settlements in the territory.

United Nations data indicates that settlers and Israeli forces have killed more than 1,000 Palestinians, including hundreds of minors, in the West Bank over the last 24 months.

Perspective from the Ground

The injured Canadian noted that, notwithstanding the violence, she felt the international presence in Ein al-Duyuk had been valuable.

“The residents felt more confident while we were present,” she said. “Kids were able to play outside. Families could sleep soundly. That alone made our presence justified.”

A local organizer involved with groups that recruit foreign volunteers said the new outpost has brought in far-right wing settlers who seem to belong to an organised group.
