Information Available Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting

At least 16 individuals lost their lives and in excess of 40 were hurt when assailants fired on a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian police have called a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, authorities have announced the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were transported to hospital.

Those who died have not yet been formally identified, but police believe their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She told the moments before the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, a senior official said that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.

One Child

A child who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number are still under care, with several in critical condition. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Called a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
