German Mayor Critically Injured in Knife Assault, Police Confirm
A newly-elected mayor in Germany's western region has been stabbed and left critically injured near her home, police say.
Iris Stalzer, 57 years old, is a member of the SPD political group and became the mayor of the municipality in the North-Rhine Westphalia state in last month.
Local police report a major operation is in progress in the community. Officials say every possibility is being checked, but they are not ruling out a domestic link.
The Chancellor censured what he called "a heinous act", adding: "We are concerned about the survival of the mayor-elect, Iris Stalzer, and wish for complete healing."
The SPD said its members were profoundly stunned by the incident.
Officials confirm Stalzer's two adopted children - a 17-year-old girl, and a teenage boy - made an emergency call to authorities at noon (11:00 BST).
The minors were subsequently removed for interviewing and forensic investigation. A journalist present witnessed a young person entering a law enforcement vehicle.
