Federal Reserve Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs added to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s employment data in early October, it halted its release once the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that showed that costs are rising, although gradually. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
