Condemnation Erupts as Trump's Post on Director Rob Reiner Spurs Sharp Backlash
Figures from both sides of the partisan divide and the entertainment world are coming together to denounce former President Donald Trump for his statements following the tragic passing of acclaimed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Controversial Social Media Post
After the couple were found deceased at their Brentwood home, Trump posted on his platform to label the late director as "anguished and struggling". In a message, he asserted Reiner's demise was "due to the hostility he provoked others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post quickly shifted to self-praise, contrasting Reiner's alleged "intense obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "unprecedented era of America".
Law Enforcement Update and Arrest
Authorities have since confirmed the arrest of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to murder in connection with the incident. It is reported his bail was set at a significant amount.
A Wave of Condemnation from Celebrities and Politicians
The response to Trump's words was swift and harsh.
“What a appalling and vile comment,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly condemned the statements. She pointed to previous rhetoric from Trump about political violence, demanding, "Have you no shame? Can you get any worse?"
California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "He is a sick man."
Mirroring this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a contemptible piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now implying the Reiners brought on their own murder because they didn’t support him. So sick."
Criticism from Within Party
A number of Republican elected officials also voiced disapproval.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". She also mentioned struggles with substance abuse and mental health within families.
Another Republican representative, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disgraceful" considering the nature of the deaths. He openly dared members in his political party to defend the statements.
Reiner's History and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a outspoken critic of Donald Trump. During a previous interview, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also warned about the dangers of authoritarian rule should Trump return to power.
"We see authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "Should the United States crumble, there’s a risk that democracy collapse around the world."
Regardless of his pointed opposition, Reiner had previously expressed "absolute horror" and condemned political violence unequivocally following the killing of a different individual.
An Ironic Connection: The Art of the Deal
Providing a layer of historical irony, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who shot the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously shared the anecdote of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's request for "special hairspray" while being photographed on a high-rise overlooking Central Park.
