Antony Price, Famed for Creating Looks for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.
Price was best known for his defined forms and theatrical styles, including the light-hued ensembles that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."
This news arrives less than a month after he debuted his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by the late Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing menswear at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "genuine original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he commenced designing ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including several ensembles for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: Central to his design philosophy.
- Dramatic Impact: Defining an era of music fashion.
- Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
- Working with Stars and Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.
The industry laments the passing to a authentic original whose influence on fashion and music remains deeply ingrained.
