A Pig's Tale: Pig Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami-Dade Leader.
While perhaps not at the same level as sparing holiday birds, but the county's top official had her own ceremonial pardon event this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with obvious nods to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued from the start of the beginning of a current administration.
“Except perhaps for eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” the mayor added. “I hope she experiences a prosperous future away from worry.”
This ceremony, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The animal, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling “six-seven” – deriving from a hip-hop line – often without clear purpose. The craze became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently declared “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A Future Secured
Six Seven the pig is now set to enjoy its days at a farm sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“This swine clemency has become a beloved tradition to kick off the end-of-year celebrations,” said the cafe owner, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It represents the spirit of Miami: happy, varied, and grounded in customs that unite the community. Every time, we are proud to celebrate heritage and mercy in a way only Miami can.”
Participants enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach fritters and strong coffee as they toasted the pig's pardon.
